Pencarrow Station situated in the Wainuiomata Valley
The Wainuiomata ride (results)
(photos) was twice postponed early in the
2006/2007 season due to bad weather. Like most rides held later in the
season, the dry summer and autumn conditions can make the clay tracks very
hard, and there are stony portions of the trail. The views from the hills
are of course spectacular, and the valleys between the trail and the
harbour, normally hidden from view, are a revelation.

Wainuiomata trail profile (Open and Intermediate)
The Start/Finish line is at an altitude of about 20 metres. The ride climbs
steeply to
approximately 220 metres at it's highest point on the outwards trail, dropping
more gently to sea level. The trail continues along the beach track to the
Novice, Junior and Warehouse Grain turn-around point. Open and Intermediate
do a further loop around Baring head and climb to about 90 meters on the way
back across the plateau behind the lighthouse. The ride returns on the same
outwards trail from the turn-around, so competitors have to face the climb
again. Much of the trail is open and exposed to the weather.
