The Pikarere Novice trail (results) (photos) is unusual in so far as it features a large downhill decent followed by a climb back up to the level of the start / finish line.

Pikarere Novice ride trail profile

Proceeding southwest down the valley, riders turn towards the coast to cross a memorable bog and climb into low hills before turning southwest again, turning at length towards the coast again. They turn north east to follow a high coastal track which descends to about 30 metres above sea level. There are fabulous views to Mana Island and further to the north, Kapiti. Then it's a long climb back to the level of the access road, and turn southwest again to the finish. The ride finish is over gentle country with plenty of opportunity for the horses to recover their heart rates after the long uphill climb.
