Note: This trail map is now quite out of date. In particular, the Novice, Junior and short Intermediate rides now go further along the old rail trail (map shows the turn-around point as the junction of the forestry road with the rail trail at the bottom of the hill)

The venue for the Maymorn event is situated in the foothills of the Rimutaka Ranges on the South side of State Highway 2 travelling North from Upper Hutt. The village of Maymorn marks the south end of the Rimutaka rail tunnel, New Zealand's longest tunnel

The Maymorn ride (results) is over relatively easy terrain, although some riders' descriptions of it as "flat" owes more to comparison with other WATRC rides than to fact, as the Line Height profile below shows. It is an "out and back" trail for Novices, with various extensions tacked on for the classes that cover greater distances. The track is rough and stony in parts, so not generally ideal for barefoot horses

A profile based on more recent rides would show a longer portion of flat terrain in the middle of the ride.

The Start/Finish line is at an altitude of 200 metres, with the halfway point at 250 metres and the highest point on the trail being approximately 395 metres, for a total of 340 vertical metres over the ride.

The Maymorn Novice trail of 2005 was approximately 15 kilometres (more recently 20 km) and follows the contours of the land north from the start through bush and pasture. It then turns south , climbing through forest, turning east again through pasture as it climbs around a spur, under Goat Rock and descending to the Pakuratahi River valley. More recent rides have then proceeded south on the rail trail (Rimutaka Incline) to a designated turn-around point, with distance classes continuing past this point and through a rail tunnel. The return is along the same trail.
